Mucha Postage Due Stamps
Along with the Hradčany and other initial stamp releases of the new Czechoslovak Republic, the artist Alphons Mucha also designed the first postage due issue. Note that the artist has echoed motifs from the Hradčany issue: linden leaves, hearts, scrolls, a wrap-around text, and lettering designed especially for the stamp. DOPLATIT indicates postage due.
The higher values are in vivid colors while the lower values are a dull brownish-olive. The paper is white or yellowish and the gum smooth.
Since supplies of postage due stamps were limited at first, the authorities permitted local post offices to hand stamp the regular issues for use as provisional postage dues. That practice was much abused philatelically.
