The Náchod Gutters

Náchodská meziarší

In September of 2002, along with some other early Czechoslovak material, Knihtisk purchased two unidirectional green 5h Hradčany gutters from the Captioned Design. Their story appeared in two Czechoslovak Specialist articles, Forgery or Amazing Find? in the Nov/Dec 2002 issue and The Nachod Discovery in the May/Jun 2003 issue. The latter article, co-authored by Johan Sevenhuijsen, was translated into Czech by Peter Hoffmann in an article called Náchodský nález and published in Zpravodaj společnost sběratelů knihtiskových vydaní čs. známek no. 59, 2004. These two gutters were stolen in September 2003. They were recovered in February 2011.

On June 2, 2008, a friend alerted Knihtisk to the presence of two lots on EBay containing six more Nachod gutters. Knihtisk purchased these lots immediately. An article describing this new find, The Nachos Gutters Redux, was published in English in the Jul/Aug 2008 Specialist. Lubor Kunc translated an edited version of this and the earlier article into Czech. Filatelie published his article in its March 2009 issue as Náchodská meziarší.

Here are images of all eight of the known Nachod gutters. No one has reported the whereabouts of the other two gutters (positions 6 and 7) from the middle of the strip.
