About Knihtisk

About the meaning of Knihtisk

The Czech word knihtisk -- the literal meaning is book-printing  -- translates into English as  letterpress or typography. It is pronounced (using an American pronunciation guide) K-NEE-tee-sk. Why did we select Knihtisk as the name for our website? Printer at book printing press

For two very good reasons: First, the letterpress, the same printing press Gutenberg introduced to Europe in the 1400's, opened universal access to information and led us into the modern and literate world. One could not ask for a better namesake!

The second reason is perhaps more immediate to collectors of Czechoslovak stamps. In 1918, the letterpress print shops of Prague produced the first Hradčany issues and in later years many of the other early Czechoslovak stamps.

Look in the Photo Gallery for images of these printing presses and the building in Prague that housed them.
